Getting to Zermatt

Flight from London to Zurich

Take your flight from London to Zurich. On arrival, take the train from Zurich airport to the village of Visp. From Visp the train starts to climb up into the mountains, revealing views of the iconic Matterhorn on arrival in the car free village of Zermatt.

Rail London - Zermatt (2 days)

Alternatively, take a leisurely two-day train journey, beginning at London St Pancras, where you'll board the Eurostar for a smooth and relaxing journey to Paris Nord. You'll then travel from Gare de Lyon to Basel where you'll spend the night. Enjoy some free time in the beautiful city of Basel before catching the train to Visp the next morning, and from Visp to Zermatt.

Days 1 & 2 - Zermatt

Zermatt

On arrival in Zermatt you'll transfer to your chosen hotel. Choose between one of our handpicked hotels, either 4* or 5* on a B&B basis.

Experience the charming Swiss car free village in the mountains, on your free day in Zermatt. You can gain access to the higher mountains by rail, the Gornergrat, and by cable-car, or stay closer to the ground on one of the many hiking trails. Whatever you decide to do, the mighty Matterhorn dominates the impressive mountain panorama. The village centre also has plenty to offer, with many restaurants, cafes and bars. Or, choose from one of our excursions below which are bookable at a supplement.

Glacier Express

Day 3 - Glacier Express

Glacier Express

Board the magnificent Glacier Express for a panoramic journey that begins with a steady descent into the upper Rhone Valley, where you'll travel through green meadows and river gorges. The train then climbs steadily back into the snow-capped mountains reaching the journey's highest point, before descending along the beautiful Rhine Valley. 'The Slowest Express Train in the World' passes Chur and spirals up again into the mountains, crossing vast viaducts, burrowing through tunnels and rising above the clouds on your way to St Moritz. You might choose to enjoy lunch aboard The Glacier Express, from a two course or three course menu.

After your journey you'll transfer to your hotel for the night. Choose from one of our 4* or 5* hotels.

Please note: There will be no Glacier Express trains running between 12th October to 5th December.

Day 4 - St Moritz

St Moritz

Enjoy a free day in St Moritz, the playground of the rich and famous. But this glamourous resort isn't all about champagne and glitz, it's also a great location for following walking trails and getting closer to nature. The nearby lakes and mountainous landscapes make this famous town a beautiful place for a wander. Alternatively, choose one of our excursions below which are bookable at a supplement.

Bernina Express

Day 5 - Bernina Express to Italy

Bernina Express

Head south on this 100-year-old route that's been awarded UNESCO World Heritage Status. Meandering through tunnels and bridges, above deep ravines and past stunning waterfalls, you'll travel through the rugged landscape of the Engadine Valley, and then through the Albula Tunnel and over the Bernina Pass. The train crosses into Italy, and you'll travel onto Milan and end your journey in Venice, where you'll transfer to your hotel for the night.

Day 6 - Venice

Venice

Enjoy a free day in Venice, the romantic city on the water. Take a gondola ride, marvel at the gothic architecture, visit an art gallery, and sip an Aperol spritz amongst the winding streets. In the city's San Marco Square you can discover some historic cafes where famous guests have visited, and whatever you do, make sure you sample some of the amazing dishes on offer. Or, choose one of our optional excursions below which are bookable at a supplement.

Day 7 – Venice Simplon Orient Express

Venice Simplon Orient Express

A very special journey awaits you this morning, aboard the Venice Simplon Orient Express, as you travel from Venice to Paris. This iconic train has carriages dating from the 1920s and 1930s and the art deco details that have been thoughtfully restored are stunning. Every carriage has a personal steward who's on hand to deliver a top quality service, and every detail aboard this luxurious train has been lovingly thought through. Italian waiters serve your fine dining meals, which have been prepared fresh by French chefs. And live entertainment plays into the evening while you sip a cocktail or two. In the morning you can choose to have your breakfast brought to your cabin by your steward, for a decadent breakfast in bed.

Inbound Travel

Day 8 – Paris to London

This morning you can choose to have your breakfast brought to your cabin by your steward, for a decadent breakfast in bed. Or you might wish to stroll to the 1920's Restaurant Car for a breakfast to savour. Coffee or tea, eggs, truffle and smoked salmon are all on offer.

The Venice Simplon Orient Express trundles into Gare de L'Est station in Paris at around 1pm, for you to transfer for your journey home. Enjoy your morning aboard the iconic train, and then transfer to Gare du Nord where you'll take the Eurostar back to London St Pancras.
