Upon arriving in Edinburgh, make your way to your chosen hotel. Once you're settled in, immerse yourself in the historic charm of Scotland's capital. Meander along the storied Royal Mile, the cobblestoned streets of which lead to the majestic Edinburgh Castle perched atop an ancient volcanic rock. Explore Edinburgh's dynamic arts scene, from vibrant galleries to theatres brimming with life. For culinary enthusiasts, the local food markets offer a delightful taste of both traditional and contemporary Scottish cuisine. Make sure to visit the regal Holyrood Palace and the Scottish Parliament building, which together illustrate the city's beautiful blend of historical and modern elements.

Embark on your grand journey aboard the Royal Scotsman in Edinburgh, savouring an indulgent afternoon tea as the train rolls westward toward Craigendoran, the gateway to the majestic West Highland Line. Keep an eye out for the first glimpse of Loch Lomond and the rugged peak of Ben Arthur before the train climbs through the wild landscapes of Glen Falloch. The day concludes with an informal dinner and entertainment in the Observation Car as you spend the night stationed in the quaint village of Spean Bridge.

Your journey continues westward through Fort William, offering spectacular views of Ben Nevis on the way. As the train skirts the shores of Loch Eil, you will glide over the iconic Glenfinnan Viaduct. Disembark at Glenfinnan to join a local guide who entertains you with tales of Scottish heroes at The Old Station Restaurant. If you're feeling adventurous, you could opt for a guided hike through Nevis Gorge to the impressive Steall Waterfall. Back on board, the train then loops back to Fort William for the evening, where you will enjoy another informal dinner as you head towards the peaceful village of Bridge of Orchy for the night.

Today's adventure takes you to the Isle of Bute, a picturesque island known for its diverse geology, history and wildlife. After a ferry ride from Wemyss Bay to the island, you'll visit Mount Stuart, a Victorian Gothic house with an impressive collection of family portraits. Later, return to the mainland where the train resumes its journey to Kilmarnock, serving a formal dinner enroute. Spend the night in the comfort of your luxury cabin as the train rests overnight in Kilmarnock.

After an early start, enjoy a leisurely breakfast while traveling along the banks of the Clyde, through Glasgow, and onward to Edinburgh. Spend the morning exploring Edinburgh with a guided tour, a visit to the Royal Yacht Britannia, and a light lunch before boarding the train for the next leg of your journey. The train heads north, crossing the iconic Forth Rail Bridge, then continues through Fife towards the town of Keith. The evening features another informal dinner complemented by entertainment in the Observation Car.

Day 6 - Kyle of Lochalsh

As you leave Keith, the train travels west along the Moray Firth towards Inverness, the capital of the Highlands. After breakfast, enjoy the breathtaking scenery on one of the UK's most scenic railway routes towards Kyle of Lochalsh, a small town looking out on to views of the Isle of Skye. Disembark in picture-perfect Plockton to take a boat trip to see wild seals or enjoy a dram of local whisky in the Plockton Hotel. The day ends with a formal dinner and a nightcap in the Observation Car as you spend the night aboard the train in Kyle of Lochalsh.

If you're feeling energetic this morning, you could enjoy a three-mile round walk over the bridge to the Isle of Skye. Following breakfast, the train retraces the route along the scenic Kyle Line back towards Inverness, skirting the Beauly Firth and continuing to Carrbridge. Here, you disembark to explore the romantic Ballindalloch Castle with its stunning gardens. Opt for a private castle tour or an exclusive distillery visit. Spend another enchanting night aboard the train in Boat of Garten, enjoying dinner and local musical entertainment.

Rothiemurchus Estate

Day 8 - Rothiemurchus Estate

Rothiemurchus Estate

After breakfast, the train brings you to the Rothiemurchus Estate in the heart of the Cairngorms National Park for a morning filled with outdoor activities such as fishing, clay pigeon shooting or guided walks. Rejoin the train at Kingussie, where lunch is served as you journey south through the scenic towns of Blair Athol and Pitlochry to Dunkeld. Here, disembark for an afternoon tour of Glamis Castle, the childhood home of the former Queen Mother. Return to the train for a formal dinner and overnight entertainment as you travel back towards Edinburgh.

As your final day onboard dawns, the Royal Scotsman leaves Dundee and crosses the Tay Bridge into the former Kingdom of Fife, concluding your spectacular seven-night journey as you arrive back in Edinburgh. Enjoy a farewell breakfast with your fellow travellers, reminiscing about the unforgettable experiences shared. Once disembarked, a private transfer will take you from the station to your chosen hotel. The remainder of the day is free to further explore Scotland's wonderful and historic capital.

Day 10 – Homeward bound
